$80,000 in annual savings to result from replacing 570 exterior lights
HONOLULU – Following the successful conversion of over 53,000 street lights to more efficient LED lights (light-emitting diode) in October 2019, the energy saving initiative is coming to the People’s Park.
An improvement project to replace the exterior park lights at Ala Moana Regional Park has begun, with the project scheduled to be completed this summer.
This project will upgrade approximately 570 of the existing lights, from high pressure sodium and metal halide lights to LED, located along the park roadways, walkways, parking lots and tennis courts. This will make Ala Moana Regional Park the first City park to have all exterior LED lights.
The new LED lights will use 60% less energy than the previous lights, resulting in an annual saving of $80,000. In effect, the project will pay for itself in just over 15 years.
“The rapid construction of our 53,000 street lights over the past couple of years has incentivized us to take the next phase into our parks, starting with Ala Moana Regional Park, the state’s most heavily used park.” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “As we continue to focus on ways to use energy more efficiently and integrate more sustainable practices across the island, it makes sense for our parks and natural areas to be part of the solution as they are ground zero for experiencing the impacts of the climate crisis. Not only will these lights be more efficient and cost effective, but they are also brighter creating a safer park atmosphere. That has always been one of our administration’s top priorities.”
The project will be conducted at night, during park closure and non-peak hours, to minimize impact to the public.
The $1.25 million contract for the conversion project was awarded to Pacific Power Electrical Contracting, LLC.
Ala Moana Regional Park, the most popular park in the state, has recently benefitted from several completed improvement projects, including:
•Repaving the Ala Moana Park Drive
•Renovations of park bathhouses and comfort stations (including LED conversions)
•Upgraded irrigation for the entire 119-acre park
•Shower renovations at the base of ‘ĀinaMoana (Magic Island)
Other large scale projects expected for the coming year include ‘Āina Moana parking lot improvements and repairs to the park ponds. You can follow the progress of improvements to the park, and view past projects and information, by visiting the park’s dedicated webpage at bit.ly/AlaMoanaPark.
