Government Grants for the Arts

Learn more about state and federal grants for the arts in Hawaiʻi! Office of Elections Voter Campaign


In October, the State of Hawaiʻi Office of Elections launched a voter campaign with the SFCA and the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum. SFCA commissioned artist Maika‘i Tubbs to design three postcards encouraging Hawai‘i residents to vote. Postcards were distributed to local businesses, focusing primarily on areas with low voter turnout.

Hawaiʻi Pandemic Action Plan

Governor David Ige recently requested a report from the Department of Accounting and General Service (DAGS) and attached agencies (including the SFCA) as to actions that have been taken in support of the pandemic priorities of protecting public health, reviving the economy, and strengthening our community.

Actions taken by the SFCA have included temperature checks and hand sanitizing stations at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum, launching a call for artwork created by Hawaiʻi artists in response to the pandemic and its impact on Hawaiʻi, distributing $427,500 in CARES Act Relief funds to Hawaiʻi arts and culture organizations, and convening the ARTS First Partnership in a unified strategy to address future education of Hawaiʻi's youth. The ARTS First Partnership includes the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Education (DOE), Univeristy of Hawaiʻi College of Education, Association of Independent Schools and other education organizations.

Call for Artists: APP COVID-19

The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts’ Art in Public Places Program has a call for artists, requesting submissions for artwork inspired by or created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact of the pandemic on life in Hawaiʻi. Artworks will be considered by a committee for the Art in Public Places Collection, which is displayed in sites across the state of Hawaiʻi, including the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum in Honolulu.

Call for Artists: 2021 Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Art Awards

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
Students and educators: submissions are open for the 2021 Scholastic Student Art and Writing Awards competition! Read the tips for students and educators, including feedback from judges and preparing for the digital submissions process: Get Ready for the 2021 Awards. Public, private, or home-school students in the U.S., Canada, or American schools in the rest of the world enrolled in grades 7-12 (ages 13 and up) are eligible to participate.
 
Final day to submit artwork is Tuesday, December 15, 2020.

Young Artists of Hawaiʻi (Hawaiʻi students grades K-6) updates will be announced here in the SFCA newsletter as well as on the SFCA website.
State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) is the Hawaiʻi regional Affiliate Partner for the Scholastic Student Art and Writing Awards. SFCA participates in the student art portion of the competition, and all entry fees for Hawaiʻi students associated with the competition are covered by the SFCA.

Poetry Out Loud

The Hawaiʻi State Finals and National Finals for the 2021 Poetry Out Loud recitation contest will be held virtually. The deadline to register your school or organization is January 18, 2021. Poetry Out Loud is open to all students in grades 9 – 12, and is designed to fit into a teacher’s busy schedule. Teachers are provided with free curriculum materials, designed to meet national standards and augment their regular curriculum with poetry recitation and competition. Folk & Traditional Arts grantee alum Kunāne Wooton has work in the exhibit “ʻElima (Five)” at the Hawaiʻi Pacific University Art Gallery (Hawaii Loa Campus) in Kaneʻohe. The exhibit is open through November 6, 2020 and also features work by Īmaikalani Kalāhele and Sean K.L. Browne with Cory Kamehanaokalā Holt Taum and David Kiyabu.

SFCA in the Community

Hawaiʻi Book and Music Festival: Hawaiʻi 2.0, Shaping Our Future
SFCA Executive Director Jonathan Johnson participated in a Hawaiʻi Book and Music Festival Zoom Webinar on October 20, on how to deepen the creative capital of Hawaiʻi. Session participants included Eric Johnson, Vilsoni Hereniko, Aaron Sala and Teri Skillman. The session has been recorded and will be available online. National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) Executive Director Forum
SFCA Executive Director participated in a forum of Executive Directors from all 50 states to discuss “What Next” and the role of State Arts Agencies going forward. Questions grappled with were
What can we control as State Arts Agencies? The survival of cultural organizations, survival of artists, return of audiences and the SAA role in deploying what we have that will make a difference.

Artists in the Schools Presentation for University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa Students
Four Artistic Teaching Partner Roster Teaching Artists and SFCA Arts Education Specialist Nikki Rosengren guest presented about the Artists in the Schools arts education program for three different University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa classes of teacher candidates. The Teaching Artists led the students through workshops to present the kind of lessons provided during Artists in the Schools residencies, while Nikki presented the granting and logistical side.

Hawaiʻi Freshman Career Expo Presentation
SFCA staff (Kamakani Konia, Art in Public Places Project Manager; Brittany Rakowitz, Community Arts Coordinator; Nikki Rosengren, Arts Education Specialist; and Alex Skees, Art in Public Places Project Manager) gave a presentation for the Hawaiʻi Freshman Career Expo this week. The expo is run by
Hawaiʻi P-20, a University of Hawaiʻi based organization that works with schools and community partners to build college and career pathways for Hawaiʻi students. The expo is a pilot program and was shared with 17 schools across the state, including Pearl City High School, McKinley High School, Kaʻū High and Palama Elementary, and even Lānaʻi High and Elementary School. This presentation was a direct result of strategic plan discussions by staff about doing more youth outreach. The expo is going on through November 5: https://events.bizzabo.com/239643/agenda.
 

Recent and Upcoming Exhibit Visits
SFCA artwork purchases are recommended by an Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) that have been invited to view a juried or curated art exhibit in the state of Hawaiʻi. The AASC is generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members, and visual arts consultants.

SFCA staff are planning to reopen the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum to the public on Monday, October 12, with a new exhibit.
 
New Exhibit: “For Walls” This exhibition highlights sculptures created specifically for walls, using them both as a support and as a backdrop. Many of us, due to the COVID pandemic and quarantining, have become all too familiar with our own four walls. With that in mind, we invite you to explore a variety of unique and dynamic ways artists engage and enliven enclosed spaces. All artworks are from the Art in Public Places Collection of the SFCA.

Committee meetings usually begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by the general meeting at 11:00 a.m.

Unless otherwise specified, the public is invited to attend SFCA Standing Committee and Commission Meetings. Meetings and agendas are posted just prior to the meetings on the
State of Hawai‘i Calendar of Events. Select “State Foundation on Culture and the Arts” from the search menu.

In order to comply with the Sunshine Law 
and social distancing requirements, notice of meetings will be posted on the State of Hawaiʻi Calendar of Events seven days prior to the meeting, submission of written testimony on agendized items will be accepted and minutes of meetings will be available within 40 days after the meeting.

For doing business with the state as a contractor, the State of Hawaii eProcurement (HiePro) is a system for issuing solicitations, receiving responses, and issuing notices of award. Solicitations and awards are posted and searchable. State Foundation on Culture and the Arts solicitations have included graphic design services, printing services, custom framing, artwork conservation and restoration.To find SFCA solicitations, search under Department: Accounting and General Services (the SFCA is administratively attached to the Department of Accounting and General Services).

Help the SFCA Select Artwork
The Art in Public Places Program of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) seeks volunteers, particularly on the Neighbor Islands, with expertise and knowledge in the visual arts field to serve as Visual Arts Consultants on Art Advisory Committees and Acquisition Award Selection Committees. The role of the Art Advisory Committee is to make recommendations to the SFCA regarding the development and design of a given commissioned art project, including location, medium, distinguishing features of the artwork, and selection of the artist. The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committees is to review and make recommendations regarding the purchase of works of art. The SFCA appoints the committee members for each exhibit visit — generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members, and Visual Arts Consultants.
