Driver's license and state ID expirations moved to August
HONOLULU -- An estimated 128,000 O‘ahu residents will have an additional 60 days to update driver's licenses, learner's permits and state identification cards.
Credentials with expiration dates between March 16, 2020 and June 8, 2021 will be valid through Aug. 6.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, Gov. David Ige's 21st proclamation extends the validity of these driver's licenses, learner's permits and state identification cards for another 60 days through August 6, regardless of the expiration date displayed on them.
This gives about 30,000 customers with driver's licenses, learner's permits and state identification cards that will expire this year between June 8 and Aug. 6 more time to renew. It also means that an estimated 98,000 other customers, who have not yet renewed credentials expired since March 16, 2020, are eligible for the extension at no penalty.
"This latest extension will allow residents to continue to drive without penalty or incurring late fees," said Nola Miyasaki, director of the city's Department of Customer Services. "We encourage residents to use the extra time to renew expired driver's licenses, state IDs and learner's permits."
Appointments are recommended for in-person visits to renew driver's licenses, state identification cards, or learner's permits. The AlohaQ appointments are updated daily, so it's important to check back every afternoon when last minute cancellations are released. To make an appointment, go to AlohaQ.org.
For residents who cannot get an appointment, stand-by service is now available at all driver licensing centers and satellite city halls on O‘ahu. Customers can walk in without an AlohaQ appointment to fill appointment slots that become available from cancellations or no-shows.
The average no-show rate is pegged at 30 percent, offering opportunities for those without appointments to renew credentials. Stand-by service is not guaranteed, and is available on a first come, first served basis.
O‘ahu residents can also download a printable letter from the website of the Department of Customer Services to use as proof that they have been given 60 extra days to renew credentials. The letter confirms that all driver's licenses, state identification cards, and learner's permits are valid through Aug. 6, 2021.
