WESTAF Receives Transformative Gift
The Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF) is the recipient of a one-time, unrestricted gift of $8 million from MacKenzie Scott and Dan Jewett. The gift is part of a new round of 286 grants from the philanthropists, totaling $2.74 billion.

In her most recent post, MacKenzie Scott writes: “Arts and cultural institutions can strengthen communities by transforming spaces, fostering empathy, reflecting community identity, advancing economic mobility, improving academic outcomes, lowering crime rates, and improving mental health, so we evaluated smaller arts organizations creating these benefits with artists and audiences from culturally rich regions and identity groups that donors often overlook.” Scott has also said that she is troubled by the increasing concentration of wealth. Her 4% share in Amazon increased by about $23 billion between October 2019 and June 2021. WESTAF is a regional nonprofit arts service organization dedicated to strengthening the financial, organizational, and policy infrastructure of the arts in thirteen western states (including Hawaiʻi). WESTAF assists state arts agencies, arts organizations, and artists in their quest to serve diverse audiences, enrich the lives of local communities, and provide access to the arts and arts education for all. Through innovative programming, advocacy, research, technology, and grantmaking, WESTAF encourages the creative advancement and preservation of the arts regionally and through a national network of customers and alliances.
WESTAF is an experienced technology developer, with projects that benefit the arts and creative industries, including the GO Smart grants management system, Public Art Archive (a free online and mobile database of public art throughout the world), and the Call For Entry (CaFE) call for artists online entry and management system.

Grants and Opportunities


SFCA ARP Grants for Nonprofit Organizations
The SFCA American Rescue Plan (ARP) Recovery Grant supporting eligible non-profit arts organizations Intent to Apply is open through July 18, 2021. Organizations must submit their eligibility documents by the Intent to Apply deadline to complete an Application. The Application will open July 1, 2021 and close July 31, 2021. The grant request amount is $15,000 and there is no match requirement for organizations.

SFCA Grants

NEA American Rescue Plan Grants
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has released guidelines for the NEA ARP Direct Grants to Arts and Culture Organizations in grant amounts of $50,000, $100,000, or $150,000. If you represent a nonprofit arts or culture organization, you may also be interested in the Americans for the Arts free webinar on Tuesday, July 6, 9:00 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time, to learn more about the specific guidelines for this program.

WESTAF American Rescue Plan Funds for Organizations
The WESTAF American Rescue Plan (ARP) Fund for Organizations will begin accepting applications on Thursday, July 1. Awards will be made to eligible arts and culture organizations throughout the 13-state WESTAF region (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaiʻi, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming), with at least one grant awarded in each state. Nominate an Individual or a Group for an NEA National Heritage Fellowship
To honor and preserve our nation's diverse cultural heritage, the National Endowment for the Arts annually awards up to nine National Heritage Fellowships to master folk and traditional artists, inclusive of one Bess Lomax Hawes Fellowship (described below). These fellowships recognize artistic excellence, lifetime achievement, and contributions to our nation's traditional arts heritage. Deadline to submit nomination: July 30, 2021. Volunteer to be an SFCA Visual Arts Consultant
Participate in making decisions about artworks for the SFCA Art in Public Places Collection. Informed community panelists make decisions at the SFCA regarding artwork purchases and gifts. SFCA Call for Artists: Hawaiʻi Governor’s Portrait
The Art in Public Places Program has posted a Request for Qualifications for the Hawaiʻi Governors portrait. Additional information and the link to the RFQ on CallForEntry.org is on the SFCA website news blog: SFCA.Hawaii.gov/News.

2021 Hawaiʻi Sea Grant High School Photo Challenge
The University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Program (HSG) invites all state of Hawaiʻi high school students (9-12th grade) to submit photos that capture the beauty and wonder of our marine and coastal ecosystems in this photo challenge Get ArtSci: Explore the Ocean Through an Artistic Lens. Students are encouraged to take an artistic and creative approach to the many ways we see marine and coastal ecosystems, including through the organisms, the communities who rely on them, and methods we use to better understand them. Winners and prizes will be announced on September 1, 2021, and photos will be published in the Ka Pili Kai December 2021 issue. Deadline: July 16, 2021 5pm HST. Historic Hawaiʻi Foundation Call for Art Submissions
Historic Hawai‘i Foundation is planning an online exhibit of artwork inspired by Hawai‘i's historic places. Dates and submittal instructions will be announced on the HHF website: HistoricHawaii.org.

SFCA Grantee Spotlight

Gordon ʻUmialiloalahanauokalakaua (ʻUmi) Kai has received a First Peoples Fund Community Spirit Award that recognizes a lifelong commitment to Indigenous culture and art. ʻUmi is an SFCA Folk and Traditional Arts Grant alum, and was named a Living Treasure by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs in 2019. ʻUmi is devoted to nā mea Hawaiʻi (things of Hawaiʻi), including nā mea kaua (things of war). He makes weapons, poi pounders and boards, kapa beaters and, his specialty, fish hooks. First Nations Luce Indigenous Knowledge Fellowship
First Nations Luce Indigenous Knowledge Fellowship awarded to Folk & Traditional Arts Grant alum Auliʻi Mitchell (hula kiʻi, Apprenticeship Grant teacher) and an Honorable Mention to Folk & Traditional Arts Grant alum Francis “Palani” Sinenci (hale building, Apprenticeship Grant teacher). The First National Development Institute and The Henry Luce Foundation selected Native Leaders for their passion and ingenuity in perpetuating Indigenous knowledge and strengthening Native communities. Regional EMMY Awards

Honolulu Theatre for Youth (HTY) is the recipient of 3 regional EMMY® Awards for its television show, “The HI Way”. HTY Artistic Director, Eric Johnson looks forward to continuing “The HI Way” journey. “As a theatre company, we were so lucky to be able to serve our community by producing television during this time and these awards speak to the talent, amazing hard work and possibility that exists when you bring a team of creative individuals together. HTY fully intends to continue offering digital work and resources alongside our theatre work in the future.”
Ballet Hawaii is the recipient of a regional EMMY® Award for their Public Service Announcement “Arts Beyond COVID.”

Taiko Center of the Pacific

Taiko Center of the Pacific has been a SFCA Biennium Grants recipient.

Chizuko Endo is also a teaching artist on the SFCA’s Artistic Teaching Partner roster, and recently completed a new lesson video for the SFCA Artists in the Schools program, demonstrating the song “Usagi Daiko” for students. 2021 National Scholastic Art Awards
Hawaiʻi educators and students interested in the 2022 Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Art Awards: works created this spring and summer are eligible for entry this fall, as long as the young creator is eligible for the Scholastic Awards at the time of entry. Hoʻohulu Hawaiʻi perpetuates art of Hawaiian featherwork
“Lum-Nelmida has been an active artist participant in MAMo: Maoli Arts Movement since 2012, and in 2013, was awarded a Master’s Apprenticeship through the Hawaiʻi State Foundation in the Culture and the Arts with his hulu master Kahalepuna (2014 MAMo Awardee, and 2014 ʻŌʻō Awards Recepient). Under this apprenticeship, Lum-Nelmida studied Hawaiian feather work in the forms of lei (adornment), kahili (feather standard), ahuʻula (cape), and mahiʻole (helmets). He also studied works from traditional materials along with how to use, cultivate, and preserve these materials. Acquisition Award Selection Committees (AASCs)

Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) visits continue to provide important support for artists and arts organization venues statewide. Exhibit holders invite the SFCA to send an AASC (application form on the SFCA website), and the qualifying invitations are presented to the SFCA Board of Commissioners for approval.

The SFCA Board of Commissioners recently approved Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) visits to these exhibits:
•Hawaiʻi Island - “Abstract Only! 2021”, Wailoa Center, Hilo. Mixed media, juried. August 6 – 26, 2021.
•Kauaʻi - “Art Kauaʻi”, KSA Gallery, Lihue. Mixed media, juried. September 17 – October 29, 2021.
•Maui - “Na Kapa Hoʻokuʻi (The Joined Kapa), Donkey Mill Art Center, Holualoa. Kapa, curated. August 28 - October 9, 2021.
•Maui - “Malama Wao Akua”, Hui Noʻeau Visual Arts Center, Makawao. Mixed media, juried. September 10 – November 5, 2021.
•Oʻahu - “Hawaii Watercolor Society Open Exhibit”, Downtown Art Center, Honolulu. Watercolor, juried. August 31 – September 18, 2021.

•The Center for Oral History at the University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa, Department of Ethnic Studies, is documenting “Hawaiʻi Life in the Time of COVID-19". This project is designed to engage our Hawaiʻi communities in examining, articulating and sharing the impacts of COVID-19 upon our Hawaiʻi island ways of life, livelihoods, health, families, communities, education, values and outlooks for the future. •Hawaiʻi Craftsmen – “Out in the Elements” A Celebration of Raku Ceramics and Plein Air Paintings Inspired by Nature. OUR MISSION
To promote, perpetuate, preserve and encourage culture and the arts, history and the humanities as central to the quality of life of the people of Hawai`i. HSFCA funding is provided by the State of Hawai`i and the National Endowment for the Arts. The HSFCA is administratively attached to the Department of Accounting and General Services.

HOURS:
The musuem is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed State and Federal Holdays. Always free admission. For pre-recorded information call 586-0900.
