HONOLULU – To help celebrate Mahina ‘Ōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language Month), the Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts will present two, free movie screenings of Moana in Hawaiian – open to the public on a first come, first serve basis with limited seating available.
This feature film version of Moana is the first Disney picture to be re-recorded in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language), having utilized 24 locally-cast ‘ōlelo Hawaiʻi-speaking actors and singers. The University of Hawaiʻi West Oʻahu’s (UHWO) Academy of Creative media secured and completed this project with Disney.
“Disney’s Moana was a huge opportunity to add another educational layer to the Hawaiian language movement,” said Heather Giugni, Native Hawaiian and Creative Producer of ‘Uluʻulu Archive at UHWO, which is Hawaiʻi’s official state archive dedicated to the care, preservation, and digitization of film and video tape related to the history and culture of Hawaiʻi.
Moana was made especially popular in 2016, when the Walt Disney Animation Studios cast Native Hawaiian and Kamehameha Schools alumnus, Auliʻi Cravalho, to play the main character of this beloved movie. The computer-animated, musical-adventure film by Walt Disney illustrates a courageous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her voyage, Moana meets the once mighty demigod, Maui (originally played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), who guides her on her journey to become a master way-finder. Together they sail across the Pacific Ocean, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds. Along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she always sought – her own identity.
Early goers will be treated to popcorn on the lawn! Eating or drinking inside the Mission Memorial Auditorium is strictly prohibited.
