Allison Wong Selected to Lead Hawaiʻi State Government Arts Agency
Allison Wong has joined the team at the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) as Executive Director, effective August 1, 2022. A leader in Hawaiʻi’s arts community for over a decade, Ms. Wong has a passion for championing the power of culture and art to promote connection, enrich the human experience, and transform lives and communities.

SFCA Welcomes New Executive Director
SFCA Board of Commissioners
On June 15, 2022, the SFCA Board of Commissioners welcomed 3 new commissioners: Jill Kuramoto, Michael Marshall, and Taylour Chang. Mahalo nui to outgoing commissioners Jane Clement, Clyde Sakamoto, and Karen Tiller Polivka.
Appointed by the state governor, the Board of Commissioners oversees the SFCA Executive Director, provides input, and approves spending. Commissioners are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their duties.
The next board meeting is scheduled for July 20, 2022, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Members of the public are welcome to attend online via Zoom. Upcoming board meetings are posted to the SFCA website calendar: SFCA.Hawaii.gov/Events.

SFCA Programs
SFCA Culture Fellowships
The Culture Fellowship is for active individual artists and practitioners living in Hawaiʻi, and is a project-based community impact arts and culture fellowship. Eight $25,000 SFCA Culture Fellowships will recognize, honor, and support the creative achievements of renowned culture-bearers of art forms vital to Hawaiʻi’s rich cultural heritage. Applications are open through July 31, 022 on Hawaii.GoSmart.org.

This grant provides eligible nonprofit 501(c)3 art and culture organizations support towards the living wage for staff salaries and/or contractual personnel in a creative worker role within the organization. Intent to apply is open on Hawaii.GoSmart.org July 1 - 30, 2022.

Recent Acquisitions
On June 15, 2022, the SFCA Board of Commissioners approved the acquisition of eleven artworks by Hawaiʻi artists. Ten of the works were nominated by committees visiting exhibitions and one was a gift, approved by a committee. A full list of artworks approved for acquisition fiscal year 2022 (July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022) can be viewed on our Art in Public Places Program page, along with information about to invite a committee to an exhibit and a link to the Art in Public Places Collection online photo album of artworks.

Acquisition Award Selection Committees (AASCs) Upcoming Exhibit Visits
Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) visits continue to provide important support for artists and arts organization venues statewide. The SFCA has conducted over 20 AASC visits during the pandemic so far.
The SFCA Board of Commissioners recently approved Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) visits to these exhibits:
•Oʻahu - “Hawaiʻi Watercolor Society 2022 Open Exhibition”. Downtown Art Center (Honolulu). Watercolor, juried. August 2 - 22, 2022.
•Maui - “Malama Wao Akua”, Hui Noʻeau Visual Arts Center (Makawao). Mixed media, juried. September 9 - November , 2022.
•Kauaʻi - “Art Kauai 2022”. KSA Gallery (Līhuʻe). Mixed media, juried. September 17 - October 28, 2022.

SFCA Grants Spotlight
Francis “Palani” Sinenci
Francis “Palani” Sinenci is a Hawaiian Hale Builder from Hana, Hawaiʻi. Dedicated to revitalizing the traditional Hawaiian art form of building thatched houses called hale, Sinenci leads the construction of countless new architectural structures and is training the next generation of practitioners to carry on the practice.
Sinenci also received SFCA Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship grants between 2000 and 2017 for Hale Kahiko (Indigenous Architecture) and Master Hale Builder.

Kumu Hula Auliʻi Mitchell
New exhibit curated by Kumu Hula Auliʻi Mitchell, “Hānau Hou Ka Hula Kiʻi: Rebirthing Hula Kiʻi in the 21st Century” on view at the Downtown Art Center (Honolulu) July 10-30, 2022. For more information, please visit the DAC website: DowntownArtHI.org.
Mitchell received an SFCA Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship grant in 2020 for Hula Kiʻi: A Tradition of Hawaiian Puppetry.

Jeff Peterson
Kī Hoʻalu (Hawaiian slack key guitar) master Jeff Peterson has written and published an instructional method book, a project he had been thinking about for a long time to make learning traditional slack key methods more accessible and to perpetuate the art.

Historic Hawaiʻi Foundation
Two recent presentations by the Historic Hawaiʻi Foundation (HHF) are now available online.
•“The Preservation of the Nancy Bannick Collection at the Hawaiʻi State Archives” (YouTu.be/C9LOliTkoMg) features a project funded in part by the SFCA through an SFCA American Rescue Plan Grant to filmmaker Robin Lung.
•“The Honokaʻa Story Map Project: Presentation and Panel Discussion” (YouTu.be/0t2Ojm5hkBM) features a project funded in part by the SFCA.

•Currently open Calls for Artists in Hawaiʻi on CallForEntry.org include the Hawaiʻi Island Arts Alliance “Plein Air Perspectives 2022” and “Abstract Only! Exhibition” and the “2022 Pacific States Biennial North American Printmaking Exhibition”. •Hawaiʻi’s Creative Industries and US Patent and Trademark Office “Path to a Patent”: learn more about intellectual property and how to protect what you’ve created! July 14 – August 18. •Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden Art Contest for Kids: The Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden celebrates its 40th anniversary with an art contest for kids ages 3-17. Deadline to submit entry: July 20, 2022. •Library of Congress Community Collections grant program: The Library of Congress and the American Folklife Center are excited to open applications for the second round of funding in the Community Collections grant program. These grants will support individuals or non-profit organizations in producing cultural documentation–photographs, interviews, audio or video recordings about their community from the community’s perspective. Materials gathered through this program will become part of the Library’s permanent collection, while locally-held copies can enhance (or seed) community archives. This exciting program is part of the larger Of the People initiative funded by the Mellon Foundation that creates dynamic opportunities for more people to engage with the Library. All activity under the initiative will expand the Library’s efforts to ensure that our historical record reflects a diversity of experiences, thus weaving a more inclusive American story. Grants will be up to $50,000, and will support projects of up to 12-months in length. Applications due August 1, 2022. •Library of Congress Virtual Volunteer: help transcribe Library of Congress documents online. Volunteers create and review transcriptions to improve search, access, and discovery of these pages from history. https://crowd.loc.gov/.
•National Endowment for the Arts: Independent Film and Media Arts Field-Building Initiative. Currently convened by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) with the Sundance Institute, the Independent Media Arts Group (IMAG) hosts field-building activities and shares resources focused on building collective power and collaborative relationships to promote equity and career sustainability for individuals working in the film and media arts industry. The network is free to join from the IMAG page. All organization types, networks, artists, and collectives from across the United States are welcome to join! The NEA is seeking proposals for an organization to implement the Independent Film & Media Arts Field-Building Initiative, which will provide a continuation of the Independent Media Arts Group (IMAG) through knowledge exchange and peer learning activities, with a focus on equity, career sustainability, and strengthening connectivity across regional and national film and media arts communities. •National Endowment for the Humanities: NEH Media Projects program supports the development, production, and distribution of radio programs, podcasts, documentary films, and documentary film series that engage general audiences with humanities ideas in creative and appealing ways. SFCA Board of Commissioners 2022 Meeting Schedule

Decisions about grants, artwork purchases, and more are made by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) Board of Commissioners. Meetings are currently being held virtually on Zoom, and the public is invited to attend. Appointed by the state governor, the Board of Commissioners oversees the Executive Director, provides input, and approves spending. Commissioners are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their duties.
Individuals may submit written testimony on posted agenda items in advance of the meeting via email to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov or by mail addressed to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, 250 South Hotel Street, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813. Individuals interested in signing up to provide oral testimony on posted agenda items at the meeting may submit their name, email, and phone number to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov. Individuals may provide oral testimony at the meeting via the above-listed video conferencing link or by calling the above listed telephone number. Testimony presented during the meeting will be limited to three minutes each.
Agenda items for General Meetings may include approval of artwork acquisition recommendations and Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) art exhibit visit recommendations.

The Hawai'i State Art Museum is dedicated to presenting the largest and finest collection of works by Hawai'i artists that celebrate the diverse artistic and cultural legacy of Hawai'i.
OUR MISSION
To promote, perpetuate, preserve and encourage culture and the arts, history and the humanities as central to the quality of life of the people of Hawai`i. HSFCA funding is provided by the State of Hawai`i and the National Endowment for the Arts. The HSFCA is administratively attached to the Department of Accounting and General Services.
HOURS:
The musuem is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed State and Federal Holdays. Always free admission. For pre-recorded information call 586-0900.
The Hawai'i State Art Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. For pre-recorded summary information on the museum, call (808) 586-0900.
