Joint search & rescue exercise to be held at ‘Āina Moana (Magic Island)

Honolulu Fire Dept., Emergency Services Dept., U.S. Coast Guard taking part in biennial effort

O‘AHU -- A joint search & rescue training exercise will occupy the land, sea, and skies of ‘Āina Moana (Magic Island) at Ala Moana Regional Park tomorrow morning (Sept. 27, 2023).

The public should expect the increased presence of emergency personnel, air support, ground, and ocean transports in the area around the park. Training set-up is scheduled to begin around 7 a.m., with the exercise scheduled to last from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. We advise members of the public to please avoid the area if possible, and to not be alarmed by the significant presence of our island's dedicated search and rescue staff and their resources.

The biennial exercise involves multiple first responder agencies, equipment, and personnel representing:

  • Honolulu Fire Department
  • Honolulu Emergency Services Department: Ocean Safety Division
  • United States Coast Guard

This exercise is designed to enhance coordination amongst O‘ahu's first responders in order to expand local knowledge of environmental conditions, expedite response time, confirm operational protocol, and further incorporate the use of technology in communication and search techniques.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of the public while this popular park location is utilized for these exercises.
