Community invited to discuss development of pool, recreation center at Kahuku District Park
Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 16 beginning 6:30 p.m. in Kahuku Elementary's Cafeteria
O‘AHU -- Mayor Blangiardi and City officials want to hear from Red Raider Country, the Ko‘olauloa community, and Windward park users concerning plans for a swimming pool and recreation center at Kahuku District Park.
A meeting to express your mana‘o is scheduled for Tuesday, January 16 beginning 6:30 p.m. in Kahuku Elementary School's Cafeteria. During the meeting, Mayor will be joined by City officials from a variety of departments to discuss the latest updates regarding the project and to hear from you.
Community engagement is an important component of this project, ensuring the future swimming pool and recreation center meets the needs and aspirations of the community now and in the future.
In November 2023, the City announced the release of $1.5 million in funding for the planning and development of the much-anticipated swimming pool and recreation center at Kahuku District Park. This funding will be for the planning and design phase of the project, including: detailed architectural plans, engineering, and environmental assessments to ensure a successful and sustainable pool facility.
This investment is further bolstered by the support of Honolulu City Councilmember Matt Weyer and AES Hawai‘i, who pledged to providing a matching fund of $1.5 million (increasing their commitment to $4 million in funding support), reflecting a strong public-private partnership to create a recreational space that will benefit the Kahuku community.
This project came as a direct result of the Mayor's April 20, 2023 Town Hall meeting in Lāʻie, where residents shared their long-standing desire for a full-sized public pool and recreation building. The closest City swimming pools for the Ko‘olauloa communities are located either at Kāne‘ohe District Park or Waialua District Park, which are approximately 25 and 17 miles from Kahuku District Park respectively. As a result, the 15.86 acre Kahuku District Park represents one of the better public locations to construct these recreational facilities.
