Projects to improve gymnasium and recreation room roofs in Kāhala, ‘Aiea, and Mānoa
O‘AHU -- Following another successful year of Summer Fun, reroofing and facility improvement projects are beginning at three City park locations within Kāhala, ‘Aiea, and Mānoa.
Kāhala Community Park
The reroofing project for the recreation building at Kāhala Community Park is beginning this week, which will require the closure of the facility for the duration of the project.
A variety of repairs and facility improvements are planned during this project including: roofing, carpentry, window repairs, installing security screens, testing and removing any lead-based paint, repainting, with other mechanical and electrical upgrades.
The project is expected to be complete, and the building reopened for public use, in early 2025. Portable toilets and a hand washing station will be provided during the project.
The $1,038,00 million construction contract was awarded to CC Engineering & Construction, Inc., with the $106,000 consultant contract for this project awarded to Ushijima Architects, Inc.
Built in 1963, this facility is an integral part of the 8.81-acre Kāhala Community Park. The park was transferred to the City in April 1962, and now contains a playground (last renovated in May 2024), play courts (renovated in June 2016), and two ballfields
‘Aiea District Park
Heading west to ‘Aiea, the district park's gymnasium roof will be improved as part of another Capital Improvement Project also beginning this week.
The project is expected to be complete, and the closed facilities reopened for public use, in Spring 2025.
The $3,483,378 million construction contract was awarded to Ralph S Inouye Co, LTD., with the $150,000 consultant contract awarded to Lou Chan & Associates, Inc.
The similarly sized ‘Aiea District Park (8.82 acres) was transferred to the City in May 1951. Its gymnasium was built circa 1970, with the roof last renovated in 1998. The gymnasium is part of several other facilities within the park, including: a 25-yard pool (upgraded recently as part of our energy savings contract), a playground (refurbished in October 2023), play courts (resurfaced in November 2020) and a ballfield with recently renovated field lights.
Mānoa Valley District Park
Finally, a roof renovation project for the large gymnasium (mauka-side) at Mānoa Valley District Park is scheduled to begin Monday, September 9.
The project aims to improve several areas of this large building, which actually has three roofs, such as the: gutters, louvers, insulation, and metal roofing. The construction will require the closure of that gymnasium, its adjacent recreation room, and the bathrooms.
Staging of construction equipment for this project will also require the closure of the larger grassy area on the Pālolo-side of the gym and several stalls within the lower parking lot by the community garden. The use of the lower parking area will close the vehicular connection of Kahaloa Drive to Olopua Street. The primary drop-off area for Mānoa Elementary School, located by the park's pool accessed from Mānoa Road, will remain open except for a portion of the curbside. Mahalo to school staff and the contractor for coordinating to improve safety and reduce the project's impact to the school, their pupils, and park users.
The project is expected to be completed, and the facilities reopened to the public, in Spring 2025. The $2,338,252 million construction contract for this project was awarded MEI Corporation, with the $132,000 consultant contract awarded to Mitsunaga & Associates, Inc.
Built in 2003, this gymnasiums is an integral part of the 29.46-acre district park. The park was first transferred to the City in July 1943, and also boasts several recreational facilities, including: a 50-meter pool (also upgraded as part of our energy savings contract), a playground (refurbished in April 2019), play courts (resurfaced in May 2020), four ball fields, and an additional gymnasium (renovated in September 2017)
We appreciate your patience and understanding while these facilities are closed for renovation.
