State Capitol Pools Project
Come and make your mark on a community mural! Artist Solomon Enos will be in the POD (Passion on Display) gallery on the ground floor of Capitol Modern during the November 1 First Friday event, 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. Enos is working on the murals that will become a large-scale artwork at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol. Learn more about the State Capitol Pools Project on the SFCA news page: sfca.hawaii.gov/make-your-mark-on-community-mural-for-state-capitol-pools-project.

Recently, members and staff of the Hawaiʻi State Senate, former state legislators, and Governor David Ige were invited to Capitol Modern to meet with artist Solomon Enos and learn more about the State Capitol Pools Project. As part of the experience, attendees added their own paint marks to the community mural that will become a glass sculpture surrounding the State Capitol building. The project is slated for completion by December 2026, in time for the next governor’s inauguration.

In addition to the Senate visits, hundreds of Hawaiʻi public and private school students have visited and added their marks to the mural.

Exhibits closing: “Pilina” and “Our Sea of Islands”

Exhibits closing - last day to view “Pilina” and “Our Sea of Islands” Saturday November 16.

“PILINA: My Relationships are My Heritage and Wealth, Festival of the Pacific Arts and Culture 50th Anniversary Exhibition” highlights the history of the Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture. Curated by Dr. Frances Koya Vaka‘uta and Alyssa Chau.

“Our Sea of Islands”: A phrase coined by scholar and cultural practitioner Epeli Hauʻofa, “our sea of islands” is an oft-quoted reference to a redirection in the perspectives of the islands of the Pacific. Rather than considering these islands as an exotic other, Hauʻofa challenged the world to see the Pacific region as a metropolis for engagement of all kinds. We consider the exhibit, Our Sea of Islands, to be one that uses engagement as the cornerstone not only for the resulting presentation of artworks but also for the very foundation of those pieces or performances from conception to fabrication to manifestation. Curated by Dr. C. Makanani Salā and Alyssa Chau of Gravitas Pasifika.
