City continues Lala recovery while preparing for Tropical Depression Two-C

Residents urged to restock hurricane kits as another tropical system approaches Hawai‘i

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu continues recovery operations following Tropical Storm Lala while closely monitoring Tropical Depression Two-C, which developed overnight east-southeast of Hawaiʻi and could bring impacts to the state this weekend and into early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, Tropical Depression Two-C was located approximately 960 miles east-southeast of Hilo early Thursday morning. The current forecast track keeps the system south of Hawaiʻi Island, but forecasters stress that it remains early and the track could shift north or south.

The National Weather Service says potential impacts to the state are possible from late Saturday through late Monday. Rainfall is currently expected to increase over the eastern end of the state Saturday night into Sunday before spreading west Sunday night into Monday. The timing and strength of winds will depend heavily on the system's eventual track and intensity.

Forecasters are also reminding the public that rain, wind and dangerous surf can extend well beyond the center of a tropical cyclone and residents should not focus solely on the forecast track.

“We have just been through a significant storm, and our teams are still out there working every day to help our communities recover,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “At the same time, we have another tropical system approaching our state, and we need everyone to take it seriously. This is the time to restock what you used during Lala, make sure your family is prepared, and stay informed. We know how quickly conditions can change, and we will continue preparing for whatever comes our way.”

Recovery continues through Statehood Day

City offices will be closed Friday, August 21, in observance of Statehood Day. However, City crews and emergency response personnel will continue recovery operations and preparations for Tropical Depression Two-C throughout the holiday.

Crews continue working across Oʻahu to address storm debris, downed trees, damaged infrastructure and other impacts from Tropical Storm Lala.

The City’s non-emergency storm information call center will remain open today until 4:30 p.m. Residents may call (808) 723-8960 for storm-related information and City resources. Anyone experiencing an emergency should call 911.

Restock hurricane kits now
Residents are strongly encouraged to use the time before the weekend to replenish hurricane and emergency supplies used during Tropical Storm Lala. Do not wait until conditions begin to deteriorate.
Residents should:

•
Restock water, nonperishable food, medications and other essential supplies for everyone in the household, including pets.

•
Replace batteries, flashlights and other supplies used during Lala.

•
Charge cell phones, portable battery packs and other essential electronics.

•
Make sure NOAA Weather Radios are charged or have fresh batteries and are ready to use in case power, cellular service or internet access is disrupted.

•
Secure or bring inside loose outdoor furniture, tents, umbrellas and other objects that could become airborne in strong winds.

•
Clear gutters, drains and areas around the home where water and debris may collect.

•
Fuel vehicles and generators and never operate a generator indoors, in a garage or near windows and doors.

•
Know whether your home is in a flood-prone area and be prepared to move to a safer location if necessary.

•
Check on kūpuna, neighbors and family members who may need additional help preparing.

Residents should continue to monitor the forecast throughout the holiday weekend and stay prepared as conditions can change quickly. The City will provide additional updates as the forecast for Tropical Depression Two-C becomes clearer.

Residents can sign up for HNL Alert at hnlalert.gov or text HNLALERT to 888-777 to receive emergency alerts and important information.
