HONOLULU — In celebration of Filipino American History Month, Mayor Rick Blangiardi presented a proclamation to Consul General of the Philippines Arman Talbo during a ceremony Tuesday at Mission Memorial Auditorium. Mayor Blangiardi was joined by members of the Honolulu City Council, with the Royal Hawaiian Band providing a special performance as part of the celebration.

The Philippine flag was also raised outside Honolulu Hale for the day, paying tribute to the generations of Filipino Americans whose contributions have helped shape Hawaiʻi and our nation.

In continued recognition of Filipino American History Month, Honolulu Hale, the Neal S. Blaisdell Center and Kapolei Hale were illuminated in the colors of the Philippine flag—red, blue and yellow—from sunset on Oct. 27 through sunrise on Oct. 28.

Celebrated each October, Filipino American History Month honors the rich history, culture and achievements of Filipino Americans, who make up one of Hawaiʻi’s largest ethnic groups. This year marks the 80th Anniversary of US-Philippines relations, however Filipino-Hawaiʻi history predates this. On Oct. 18, 1587, the first recorded Filipinos arrived in what is now the continental United States at Morro Bay, California. Their arrival marked the beginning of a centuries-long Filipino presence in the United States and an enduring legacy that continues to enrich communities across Hawaiʻi and the nation.
