HONOLULU — Oʻahu residents are being urged to renew expiring Hawaiʻi driver’s licenses and state identification cards up to six months early to avoid logjams and appointment shortages.

The number of expiring credentials in the City and County of Honolulu will remain at high levels in the weeks ahead, averaging more than 7,100 renewals per month.

To avoid last-minute, long-wait appointments and potential gaps in ID validity, the city is continuing to urge residents to use the option to renew their Hawaiʻi driver’s licenses or state IDs up to six months before the expiration date.

“We remain in a peak period for renewals, and highly encourage customers to make an appointment as soon as they enter the six month window,” said Department of Customer Services Director Kim Hashiro, who oversees driver licensing centers and satellite city halls in the City and County of Honolulu. “By acting early – up to six months early – residents can secure an appointment at their convenience, avoid crowded locations, and ensure their identification remains active without losing any time on their existing expiration date.”

To address high demand and free up in-person appointment slots, select driver licensing centers and satellite city halls have been offering Saturday hours; Saturday appointment blocks are released online every Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. immediately preceding the scheduled weekend dates.

Additionally, next-day slots are actively injected at the Kapālama, Kapolei, Koʻolau, and Wahiawā driver licensing centers. This offsets lost time from no-shows and sudden cancellations.

Book an appointment up to six months early on the city’s online reservation system at

Renewing early ensures that resident have plenty of time for processing and receiving their new, secure credentials in the mail within five weeks. Temporary Hawaiʻi driver’s licenses and state IDs are not accepted at airport TSA checkpoints.
